The Foundation Collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is internationally renowned for its modern art collection amassed by Sir Hugh Percy Lane (1875-1915), celebrated art collector, dealer and connoisseur of Old Master paintings. He is particularly recognized today for his acumen in his times to collect French Impressionist paintings for British collections. Thus, this astounding collection is primarily comprised of works in different media by famous British and French 19th century artists including Degas, Monet, Courbet, van Gogh, Picasso, Henry Moore, Alfred Sisley and Andy Warhol, among the many. This evocative exhibition, From Degas to Warhol, offers a rare opportunity to display to new audiences in Europe and abroad a special selection of some 60 masterpieces from this stellar collection conserved in South Africa. The masterful works on display – landscapes by Turner, Monet and Courbet, a charcoal drawing by van Gogh, lithographs by Matisse and Lichtenstein, delicate pastel on paper by Degas – are but a few examples of the breadth and significance of the JAG collection.
