Although the modern word “pirate” comes from the ancient Greeks who made it part of their language in the 5th century BCE, the origins of piracy at sea are much older.
Organized and designed by Contemporanea Progetti and its partner, Expona, the fascinating history of the ancient pirates was retold through the display of original artefacts and immersive exhibition devices in this entertaining and evocative exhibition. Conceived as a voyage in the ancient waters of the Mediterranean, the sea was always kept in view – coastlines, islands and ancient ports. Since many traces of the story have been found in countless shipwrecks, modern marine archaeology was also a protagonist of the story, and very much on view.
